Nguyễn Xuân Bảo joined a Zen (Vietnamese: Thien) monastery at the age of 16, and studied Buddhism as a novitiate. Upon his ordination as a monk in 1949, he assumed the Dharma name Thích Nhat Hanh. In the early 1960s, he founded the School of Youth for Social Services in Saigon. Thích Nhat Hanh has become an important influence in the development of Western Buddhism and lives in the Plum Village Monastery in the Dordogne region in the South of France. | |||
